Super Tuesday

I am really excited about the entire electoral process this year. Actually, it's the first time I have ever paid much attention to the primaries. I've listened to results but never felt entirely vested in the whole process, and pretty much felt like the worst candidate from each side would be the chosen one. Pretty depressing, but definitely true. A month ago, I was sure the same would be true. I could just picture having to choose between Hillary and Huckabee. But, each step of the way has been exciting this election year--who would have thought we'd be where we are right now? Each caucus and primary has captured my attention and I've sat rapt awaiting the results. And what's going to happen today? I can barely wait.

It's interesting that the case is so incredibly different with the students in my class. Last week, I asked how many were planning to vote this November and only about 20% raised their hands. I was disheartened to hear that they didn't think their vote really mattered nor did they care that much. One student (whom I was particularly surprised didn't plan on voting) said he heard that Mickey Mouse got more votes than some of the candidates on the ballot. It was hard to convince them otherwise, particularly when they don't plan on voting in local elections either where each vote counts a lot.

So, I wonder, is it this election that is getting me interested in the whole thing or am I just reaching an age where I care more? Sure, I've voted since I turned 18, but it really has been only recently that I've paid attention to the primaries or felt truly excited by the process. Will these young people begin to feel differently as they get older too?

I hope so. If only for them to feel compelled somehow by something outside their own protected box. Not to say that I step out of my own as often as I could, but it's easier to see in others, isn't it?

Anyway, I can't wait for the polls to close. I think I'll be missing my bedtime tonight.

I am way more interested this time around too. I think because there have been such big names around: Rudy and Hillary and for some reason I heard about Obama early on. I am so glad that Rudy is out.

I am not registered under any party, so I am not voting today. BUt I am also excited to see what happens.

My impressions of the candidates have been formed largely through watching a few debates. And I really liked Huckabee! ;) I did! I guess it also helpd to see him on the Cobert Report, even though Stephen Cobert was largely teasing him, it felt like a familiar face. McCain and Romney seemed so arrogant. And danced a political jog at the questions while Huckabee seemed to make a lot of sense.

At the other debates, I liked Edwards. I really liked that he was a smooth talker. Funny, right? I thought all three had good things to say, but I totally fell for Edward's smooth stlye. In the end it seemed like he would be able to act on his ideas precisely because of that smoothness. Seems like he can bring people together. Hillary just seems mean. And at that debate Obama seemed very, very scared...which wasn't too confidence inspiring. Otherwise I like Obama. One of the reasons that I like him, is because my mom likes him. And I figure that if he says things that speak to a Southern conservative who has probably never voted for a democrat in her life, then he really has a fighting change. Both to win, and to bring people together.

Ultimately, I hope that Michael Bloomberg decides to run. I love, love, love him. Too much. But I'm hopelessly devoted to that little guy. Rumor is that he is waiting to see who the front runners are. He keeps saying that he won't run, but I figure if I send enough fan mail, I just might be able to convince him. ;)

Was this more than you wanted to know?

I couldn't agree more, I've never really been politically charged up but after the last 8 years it seems more important than ever to me as a reasonably young adult 30- something.

I know what you mean, Robyn--I feel like supporting the candidate who seems genuine and straight-forward. It seems like very few of the candidates actually answer the question asked of them--Obama and McCain are the only two I feel actually do that--as for the arrogance, I wonder if anyone could run for president who wasn't... The only time Hillary answers a question honestly is when she thinks the majority agrees with her. After yesterday, my bet is it's going to be between her and McCain though. Sure will be interesting.

And Redbeard--thanks for your post! It is an exciting time. Kind of cool to see that the race might not be determined before our Vermont primary, too!
